Macquarie Generation
Macquarie Generation is a NSW State Owned Corporation established in 1996. Each year the Corporation produces approximately 15% of the electricity needed by people in Eastern Australia from South Australia to Queensland. This is the equivalent of 40% of the electricity needed by the people of New South Wales, making Macquarie Generation Australia's largest electricity generator.
The Corporation owns and operates Liddell and Bayswater Power Stations between Singleton and Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley of NSW.
Over many years Macquarie Generation has explored and invested in a range of renewable energy projects and operational upgrades that improve environmental performance at Liddell and Bayswater.
In recent years Macquarie Generation has been building Australia's largest solar thermal project at Liddell Power Station. This is the first time in the world that solar technology has been integrated with a coal-fired power station, and has been a significant contribution to Australia's developing solar energy industry.
In 1999 Macquarie Generation launched Australia's first biomass co-firing program. This permits co-firing biomass and recycled oil with coal, making further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Over the last 5 years, Liddell Power Station has undergone a $100 million technology upgrade to provide additional capacity and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By replacing all the steam turbines, efficiency of the power station has increased 7%, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by over 750,000 tonnes a year and more electricity is produced from the same amount of coal.
Macquarie Generation's head office is located in Lambton.
NBN Television
Together Today emerged from a collective 'whole-of-community' pledge to sustain the future of our environment.
As an original Foundation Member, NBN is committed to informing and educating the wider community about better ways to save and use our valuable resources. NBN has also taken a lead role in helping to position our region as an innovative producer of world leading energy and water efficient solutions through developing state-of-the-art ideas and technologies.
NBN's CEO Deborah Wright holds the role of Chair, Together Today Cooperative Limited Board. NBN supports, represents and is committed to the Together Today Communications Committee.
A regular Together Today segment on NBN's Evenings News at 6pm includes environmental stories that highlight exciting research, innovations and services. NBN's Weather Presenter, Gavin Morris, introduces these special features which range from methane power plants to energy saving tips, e-recycling and "green" green keepers.
NBN's independent production arm one80° DIGITALPOST, involved from day one in the branding launch of Together Today, produced a powerful and memorable advertising campaign launching Together Today in April 2007, which highlighted remarkable world-class ambassadors from the region and their personal and business commitment to the environment. one80° DIGITALPOST's high end production services and creative team have been engaged in the production of the latest Together Today Refresh and Rebate campaigns.
Newcastle City Council
Over 140,000 people live within the Newcastle local government area (LGA). Newcastle City Council looks after public facilities and provides the community with more than 150 services.
Over the past 14 years, Council has been positioning the city as an international testing ground for climate change mitigation initiatives via the award-winning ClimateCam® program. The program provides the community with access to real-time greenhouse gas emission data across the Newcastle LGA. It also shows local businesses, schools, community members and other councils how they can reduce energy consumption, water use and waste generation while saving money.
The implementation of Council's Greenhouse Action in Newcastle (GAIN) Plan 2001-08 saw a reduction in Council's corporate emissions by 13.6% over 1995 levels and assisted the community to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20.2% below the projected 2008 business-as-usual levels. Together, these actions resulted in a saving of almost 625,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
Council is in the process of developing a new ten-year climate change action plan with the input of the Newcastle community.
Hunter Water Corporation
Hunter Water is proud to be a foundation member of the Together Today program and we look forward to the challenge of meeting the vision to 'transform the Hunter to create Australia's most energy and water efficient region'.
Initiatives such as Together Today offer a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with other partners to change the future for ourselves and the generations beyond
Hunter Water undertakes numerous programs and campaigns to raise community awareness of water issues such as how to become water efficient and what Hunter Water is doing to protect the Hunter's water supply into the future.
Hunter Water also develops organisational initiatives to reduce energy usage through projects such as the implementation of variable speed drives at key pumping stations, reduction of carbon emissions through the development of a green house gas abatement strategy and the use of biofuels in the corporate fleet.
Hunter Water has also been championing a more sustainable workplace that reduces its environmental footprint through the formation of Eco-Office, joining the DECC initiative, Sustainability Advantage, and continuing to follow the Waste Reduction and Purchasing Policy (WRAPP).
Hunter Water understands that moving towards a more sustainable future is not something that can be done quickly and in isolation. It requires champions in workplaces, communities, organisations, schools and every part of the area in which we live, work and play.
Future plans include continuing to provide the community with a range of environmental awareness programs delivered through education, community and sponsorship activities. The continued upgrade of pump stations to make them more energy efficient, the implementation of water efficiency initiatives identified in the H250 Plan and participation in DECC's Sustainability Advantage program.
It is hoped that Hunter Water, leading by example and being "an energy and water efficient champion" for the area can help meet the vision of transforming the Hunter into Australia's most energy and water efficient region.
