Coal & Allied

Operating in the Hunter Valley for more than 150 years, Coal & Allied has long been commmitted to sustainable development. Coal & Allied believes today there is an immediate need for their people, products and operations to together find better ways to help the environment now, and into the future. Looking at how to use less water, electricity and diesel at our Hunter operations is one of the first priorities.

What Coal & Allied doing to help the environment?

Major Hunter Valley coal producer Coal & Allied is a proud TogetherTODAY Foundation Member. Coal & Allied is rolling out its own climate change action plan across its three Hunter Valley sites, which is aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions from its operations.

Coal & Allied’s General Manager External Relations Fiona Nicholls said each operation has introduced a metering and monitoring programme, to measure each mine’s electricity usage.

“Just like ClimateCam, which shows how much electricity is being used in 15 zones across Newcastle, Coal & Allied is also monitoring its electricity and fuel usage,” Ms Nicholls said.

“At our mine sites we are metering and monitoring how much electricity and diesel our trucks, buildings and machinery are using so we can look for ways to improve specific work practices to reduce our impact.“For example, at Hunter Valley Operations we have starting refuelling trucks in the mining pit, so that no fuel is wasted by trucks having to travel a longer to distance to refuel.“These initiatives are being implemented by a range of climate change champions, including Maria Zappalla at Hunter Valley Operations, Nicholas Earner at Mount Thorley Warkworth and Kevin Milham at Bengalla.”

Ms Nicholls said Coal & Allied takes very seriously its responsibility to minimise the impacts of its operations on the environment.

As part of the Rio Tinto Group, Coal & Allied’s plan focuses on the short, medium and long term, through energy management; designing for the future; and clean coal.
