Smart Energy Expo Newcastle 2008 will be held on 29th and 30th November 2008 at the Honeysuckle Boiler Shop, Newcastle.

Starting sustainability early!

Hunter TAFE’s onsite childcare facility, Carinya, is proving it’s never too early to learn about sustainability and good environmental practices.Rachael Kinsella, an early childhood teacher at Newcastle TAFE Campus, developed an environmental education booklet which has been published through Early Childhood Australia, titled “Greening Services: Practical Sustainability”.

Electronic Waste Recycling Event

On Saturday October 25 over 800 residents came through the gates of Newcastle City Council’s Turton Road Depot between 9am and 3:30pm for an Electronic Waste drop off event. This year 30 tonnes of hazardous electronic waste was diverted from landfill dwarfing last year’s collection of 3 tonnes of e-waste from 130 participants.

Hunter TAFE is committed to environmental sustainability and we have adopted a range of programs and strategies to move our organisation, local businesses and the community towards greener production and consumption.

‘Green Collar’ jobs are expected to boom in the near future and Hunter TAFE can train or retrain workers through individually customised courses to create a more environmentally sustainable region. (more…)

What Is Together Today

At a time when the climate change debate was firing up, leaders from within our community joined forces and pledged to establish the Hunter as Australia’s most energy and water efficient region.Launched in April 2007, Together Today is all about showing people how to use energy and water more efficiently at home, at work and at school. Energy and water are precious resources and by becoming smarter in how we use them, we can save money and help the environment.The Together Today Foundation Members built on the strength of the Solar Cities bid process and, despite missing out on a $15 million grant from the federal government, the key partners forged ahead.

Never before has our environment been such an important social, economic and political issue.

Together Today aims to inform and educate our community about smarter ways to save and use our valuable resources, while supporting the research, development and integration of leading environmental, energy and water saving initiatives across our region.

2. Switch off standby - Appliances on standby consume up to 10% of your electricity bill.

NBN has taken a lead role in promoting Together Today to help position Newcastle and the Hunter region as world leaders in producing energy and water efficient solutions.

Each week, NBN’s 6pm News features a Together Today environmental story to inform us about exciting initiatives.

As part of the weather segment on Tuesday nights, Garry Youngberry keeps a watchful eye on ClimateCam.

Created by Newcastle City Council, ClimateCam is a city wide power meter that uses a web-based measurement and reporting tool to track greenhouse emissions for the City of Newcastle.
