Eighteen schools from across the Hunter will today celebrate being sponsored by five local organisations to participate in the ClimateCam® for Schools project. Developed by Newcastle City Council, ClimateCam for Schools tackles climate change at a local level by showing students how to reduce energy and water use in their schools.
Launched in July, the project provides a unique sponsorship opportunity for businesses to help local schools save money and help the environment. Of the eighty schools on the waiting list, the first eighteen can now get started.
Round one sponsors include Macquarie Generation, Biodiesel Industries Australia, Port Stephens Council, Newcastle Port Corporation, Newcastle Herald and Newcastle City Council.City Energy and Resource Manager Peter Dormand says eighteen schools have been sponsored and are ready kick off the New Year by learning better ways to use energy and resources.
“To celebrate their sponsorship, the schools will be awarded ClimateCam plaques which help to track progress through the eight- milestone program”
“The schools will receive online electricity monitoring and then be guided by the Council team to achieve eight gold stars that represent a school environmental plan, energy and water monitoring, AAA taps and bubblers, waste recycling, trees for carbon, rainwater tanks, dual flush toilets, and smart lighting,”
Businesses are urged to get on board and sponsor the participation fee for the remaining 62 schools on the waiting list.
“Climate change demands urgent community action and there is no better place to start than in our schools” says Mr Dormand.
